About the course

What this course is about

Sustainability is in the curriculum documents. It is rarely in Tuesday’s double period. Most educators are told to include the green transition without being shown how it fits a maths lesson or a full timetable.

This course treats sustainability as a question for the whole organisation, not one department’s topic. You start from the European sustainability competence framework GreenComp and work outwards: climate literacy in your own subject, an eco-audit in which learners do the counting, and “Kilowatt Detectives” — estimating your organisation’s carbon footprint from real energy bills and a travel survey. Wednesday is a bridge day to the digital world: what devices, data centres and AI cost in energy and e-waste, and where AI genuinely helps sustainability — or is just an expensive way to do something simple.

What makes it different: it is the only course in our series that is not about AI — with one bridge day on the digital and AI footprint of education.

Who is it for

Teachers and lecturers of any subject and age group, eco-coordinators, leaders and facilities or project staff. No science background is assumed — language, arts and vocational colleagues are very welcome. No prerequisites. Bring a laptop and your organisation’s energy bills.

Learning outcomes

What you will learn

By the end of the course you will be able to:

1

Locate three points in your own teaching where a GreenComp sustainability competence fits.

2

Lead a conversation on climate change that acknowledges eco-anxiety without amplifying it.

3

Conduct an eco-audit of energy, waste, water, food or mobility, with a plan for learner participation.

4

Calculate an annual carbon estimate for your organisation from real bills and a travel survey.

5

Assess your digital footprint and spot unproven "green" claims from suppliers.

6

Present a one-year Green Action Plan with three measurable targets, owners and review dates.
